The case for Doubtful Sound
Choose Doubtful if the point of coming to Fiordland is to feel far away. The fiord is the larger of the two, the approach filters out the crowds, and once the Patea Explorer shuts off its engines mid-fiord, the loudest thing around is waterfalls. The day cruise from Manapouri holds its rating (currently 4.8★ from 1,808 reviews) with a journey that several reviewers describe as part of the reward, not a chore — 45 minutes across Lake Manapouri, the rainforest road over the Wilmot Pass, then around three hours on the water.
Doubtful is also the fiord with the overnight option: the Wanderer stays out after the day boats leave, and evening and dawn on the fiord are something no day trip can copy. It departs from Manapouri, books out months ahead in the southern summer, and its free cancellation ends 14 days before departure — plan it early or not at all.
